As Microsoft’s Director of Civic Technology, Matt creatively leverages Microsoft’s products, services, and platforms to achieve civic good in cities. In 2016, he took a leave of absence to lead the Digital Mobilization team at Hillary for America. His team designed and orchestrated the campaign’s suite of SMS, email, phonebanking, social media, and voter registration technologies. Matt has previously led online advocacy campaigns, communications, and trainings for the New Organizing Institute, Americans for Campaign Reform, and Ditto & Co .
Matt has a Master’s of Science from the Center for Civic Media at the MIT Media Lab, where he quantified global media attention to stories like Trayvon Martin’s, designed a peer-to-peer humanitarian aid marketplace, and built an award-winning product to fight misinformation online. He also holds a BA with high honors from the University of Maryland College Park, where he wrote a thesis on the disruption participatory media brought to political journalism.
