As Tom Petty once said, the future is wide open.

This Used to be My Playground

Reading’s coolest playground, Imagination Station, is no more. And the Chronicle’s front page coverage was depressing:

The community came together to build it, and apparently communities don’t build very long-lasting playgrounds.

But Imagination Station had a lot going for it, such as the walkie talkie spots and tunnels.

I remember how excited I was the day I found the secret burrow that gave you access to UNDERNEATH all of the structures. Not long after I was told that the playground had a major rat infestation problem and that that’s where the rats scurried about stockpiling their discarded ice cream wrappers.

Please, leave your favorite Imagination Station memories in the comments so it can live on through this blog, if not the pile of lumber pictured above.

Please Come to Boston in the Spring…

…it’s a beautiful thing.

It’s one of the most beautiful days of the year – Opening Day. Hope springs eternal.

It’s like 80 degrees in DC today, so it doesn’t feel entirely Spring-like, but I’m not complaining. In fact, I’m going for a Tidal Basin cherry blossom run.

Here are some Red Sox goodies for you loyal Boston natives:

Was oh so nice

Sadly no Butch Hobson mentions.

Jordan’s Furniture short-selling the Sox

With just a few weeks until opening day, Jordan’s Furniture is placing a massive bet against the Red Sox winning the World Series in 2007 by offering a full refund on furniture items purchased by April 16th. I understand the idea behind these kind of promotions in say, 1998, but come on, we won the World Series less than three years ago and we have one of the best starting rotations in baseball this year.

jordan.jpgFor those of you not from the Boston area, Jordan’s Furniture is yet another furniture store with annoying commercials, although unlike Bernie, Phyl, and the Flea Market guy, they do try to contribute something to civilization other than matching living room sets. For instance, their Reading store singlehandedly quadrupled the number of fun things to do in Reading with trapeze lessons, liquid fireworks, and an Imax theater.

Of course, this ruined the quintessential-New-England Lake Quannapowitt with light pollution, but it’s all worth it for a mural of the State House made entirely of Jelly Beans (sidenote: who knew Wakefield had a parody website?). Unfortunately Barry & Barry are still pretty annoying, although apparently one of them is now working with John Lithgow on a Broadway show (Wikipedia never fails).

Halmahk Cod

I’ve never claimed to have a Boston accent, although shades of it do come out at times, like when living with Chris “born in Med-fud” Tringale, or drunkenly slurring words, but generally my parents aren’t from New England so I didn’t pick it up. Then how come this quiz says I have a Boston accent? Because I’m not one of THESE people:

13. Last question. When you say “bag” does it rhyme with “vague”?

What American accent do you have?

Your Result: Boston

You definitely have a Boston accent, even if you think you don’t. Of course, that doesn’t mean you are from the Boston area, you may also be from New Hampshire or Maine.

What American accent do you have?

Liberate the People’s Republic of Cambridge

From: Justin

Justin’s birthday gift to me was better late than never, and actually pretty sweet. He got me two shirts from a company called Brandwashed. The company prints all of its invoices, etc. on looseleaf paper, and sent along about 20 stickers of other shirt designs in a fresh-scented “sanitary napkin” bag. Below are some of the more entertaining t-shirts available. They also have a few other cities available, in case you’re not from metropolitan Boston.

Justin got me this one:

and it also came with this one free:
